macOS Gaming Network Setup
System Requirements
- •macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
- •Intel Mac or Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4)
- •Internet connection
- •Administrator access (for installation)
MoleTun runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs with full performance optimization for each architecture.
Installation
Download MoleTun
Visit the MoleTun website and download the macOS installer (.dmg). The universal build works on both Intel and Apple Silicon.
Open the Installer
Double-click the downloaded .dmg file. Drag MoleTun to your Applications folder.
First Launch
Open MoleTun from Applications. macOS may show a security warning since the app was downloaded from the internet.
Allow in Security Settings
If blocked, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → scroll down and click "Open Anyway" next to the MoleTun message.
Permission Setup
MoleTun requires specific macOS permissions to create the virtual network interface.
Network Extension Permission
On first run, macOS will prompt you to allow a system extension:
- •Click "Open System Settings" when prompted
- •Go to Privacy & Security → Network Extensions
- •Enable the toggle for MoleTun
- •Enter your Mac password to confirm
- •Restart MoleTun after approval
Allow Network Filtering
MoleTun may also request permission to filter network content:
- •A system dialog will appear asking to allow network filtering
- •Click "Allow" to enable the virtual network adapter
- •This is required for MoleTun to route traffic through the virtual LAN
If you miss the permission dialogs, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and look for MoleTun under Network Extensions and Content & Privacy.
Connecting to a Room
- •Launch MoleTun from your Applications folder
- •Sign in or create an account
- •Create a new room or enter a friend's room code
- •Once connected, your MoleTun IP address appears in the app
Cross-Platform Play
MoleTun creates a unified virtual network across all platforms. Your Mac can seamlessly connect with:
- •Windows PCs: Full compatibility with Windows 10/11 users
- •Linux computers: Works with any Linux distribution
- •Steam Deck: Connect with friends on handheld devices
All players appear on the same local network regardless of their operating system or physical location.
Playing with Windows/Linux Friends
- •All players install MoleTun on their respective platforms
- •One person creates a room and shares the code
- •Everyone joins using the same room code
- •Launch your game and look for LAN/local multiplayer options
- •Players should see each other as if on the same local network
Apple Silicon Optimization
MoleTun is built as a universal binary with native Apple Silicon support:
- •Native M-series performance: No Rosetta translation needed
- •Energy efficient: Optimized for laptop battery life
- •Fast startup: Launches quickly on Apple Silicon
Intel Macs are fully supported with the same feature set.
Firewall Configuration
macOS firewall usually works with MoleTun automatically. If you experience connection issues:
- •Open System Settings → Network → Firewall
- •Click "Options" or "Firewall Options"
- •Find MoleTun in the list and set to "Allow incoming connections"
- •If not listed, click "+" and add MoleTun from Applications
Verifying the Connection
To confirm MoleTun is working correctly:
- •Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal)
- •Run:
ifconfig | grep -A 5 utun - •Look for an interface with an IP in the 10.x.x.x range
Or simply check the MoleTun app—your virtual IP is displayed when connected to a room.
Troubleshooting

Does MoleTun work on Apple Silicon Macs?▼
Yes. MoleTun includes native Apple Silicon support for M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips. No Rosetta translation is needed.
Can I play with friends on Windows?▼
Absolutely. MoleTun creates a cross-platform virtual LAN. Mac, Windows, and Linux users can all join the same room and play together.
Why does macOS ask for so many permissions?▼
MoleTun creates a virtual network adapter which requires system-level access. These permissions ensure only apps you approve can modify network settings. The permissions are standard for any networking software on macOS.
Do I need to disable the macOS firewall?▼
No. MoleTun works with the firewall enabled. Just ensure MoleTun is allowed in the firewall settings if you have strict rules configured.
Will MoleTun slow down my Mac?▼
MoleTun uses minimal resources. You won't notice any performance impact during normal use or gaming.
